People here speak Freutcish, and it’s also a problem. (French-Dutch-English)

Internet is very expensive and very slow.

It rains a lot.

The drivers in Belgium are far far worse than anything I’ve ever seen in the US. With one exception, everyone can park straight here.

The roads were designed by a drunk Scotsman.

Soda without corn syrup is fantastic. (not new, just restating)

Soda is very expensive.

Beer is very cheap. And strong.

People protest everything in Brussels. And they’re creative about it too. Don’t like the tax on tomatoes? Farmer Joe brings his tomatoes to the street outside Parliament and throws them at birds roosting on the building. Picket signs are old news.

So do me a favor. Before you send me an email, make an effort with it, please?

I recieved the following a few weeks ago:

Subject: hello

hay

u want 2 do lunch later?

~J

I almost didn’t bother to respond to him, but my conscious got the better of me. He broke many of my email rules. So many that I considered marking it as spam for the hell of it.

The subject tells me nothing about the contents of the email.

It’s not obvious from the excerpt above, but it was sent from an email address that he doesn’t normally use, and thus I didn’t recognize it right away. The signature, “J” tells me nothing. That’s alright if I’m in a long email chain with somebody, but for an initial email?

Would it kill somebody to use proper English?

The number 2 is just that, a number.

If you can’t spend the 10 extra seconds to type out “You”, don’t send me an email. (Could take that long on a crackberry, I’m trying to give benefit of the doubt here!)

More of email etiquette here and here. My favorites include:

Don’t Use The Forward Button. Ever.

Nothing is more wasteful than to reply to an e-mail by including a complete copy of the original with the words “I agree”, “Okay” or “Ditto” at the bottom.

Use of upper-case words is the equivalent of shouting in some one’s ear. ONLY use upper-case words when trying to make a point (such as I just did). Even at that, you should be careful with who you are exchanging messages.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m guilty of many of these. Heck, today, I was guilty of many of these. But what’s that line from Family Guy….?

“You know what grinds my gears?”

Bad email etiquette is the answer of the day.

Note: I did reply to him, I did have lunch with him, and I failed to mention the anguish that his note caused. Maybe he’ll read this.

Some minor Ted updates. Or major if you want to think of it that way.

New interface, new version of Wordpress. Added some recipes to the side menu. Still trying to decide where to put the penguins in this one. Let me know if you have ideas.

Don’t normally use this for life/personal things, but thought some sort of an update was in order. Overall doing pretty well at the moment.

Job: Good (read: pays the bills, possibility for advancement, resume building if nothing else)

Rescue Squad: Good (read: almost done with EMT class, still having fun, still learning, still making a difference)

Living Situation: Improving (read: friend buying a house soon, probably move in with him, kitchen I can use!)

Family: Good (read: all in good health, even the crazy ones, Mom going in for surgery in a few weeks, kinda a big deal, but everyone is optimistic.)

Social Life: Improving (read: still have little time for breathing, let alone spending time with friends etc, but recent events lead me to believe that this is also looking up.)

Personal Health: Improving (read: overall I’m pretty healthy, but can always do better. Have cut soda pretty much completely out of my diet, only one or two cans a week. those that know me realize how impressive that is. Started up with a decent workout program that I’m pretty sure I can stick to (yey kettlebells!) and just had a healthy visit to the doctor/dentist.)

Remember how I said we should not go too fast? Well here’s more of the same.

In our rush-aholic world slowing down seems subversive. In the workplace we have to be “seen” to be working. Even though doing a task more slowly can often produce a result faster, many of us get caught up in unnecessary meetings and tasks. You may be suffering from too much speed. After all, you are reading this. We humans are not always-on, efficient machines that can run seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Burning the candle at both ends results in, well, burnout.

Humans need rests, relaxation, and recreation. We need time to think about things, to clear the mind, and to have fun. But to a person overburdened with claims on her time, fun seems only a distant remembered state of mind.

Slowing down is a way to incubate, conserve, and harvest our energy, not about relief from boredom by just watching more TV or going shopping. You may have to confront boredom at first. Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better.

The article breaks it down quite nicely:

Don’t slow down quickly

Have a slow hour

Slow and calm

Eat slowly

Exercise slow

Do one thing at a time

Slow your attention

Slow down now.

It also occurs to me that I should follow my own advice… but well, … soon. Maybe.

This is a Firefighter/Friday Crew approved drink.

Ingredients:

6 large eggs

3/4 cup sugar

1 quart light cream

1 tablespoon vanilla

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 cup brandy

1.5 cups bourbon or spiced rum

freshly grated nutmeg

Preparation:

In large bowl, beat eggs until they are a pale yellow and slightly frothy.

Add sugar, cream, vanilla and cinnamon. Stir until well blended.

Add brandy and bourbon/rum (or milk, see below) and stir.

Transfer to large pitcher and chill until cold, at least 3 hours.

Serve with sprinkle of nutmeg.

This makes a gallon, give or take. If you’d rather make it without the alcohol, replace it with 2.5 cups of milk (whole or 2% works best). Either way, it won’t be healthy, but it’s good!

So I just got my first ‘real’ christmas card. From some friends of mine that got married last year.

I never thought I would be one of those people who gets 20-30 holiday cards and puts them on the mantle with ribbon. My parents are those people. Growing up, I would look forward to getting and opening the holiday cards, placing them on the ribbon and watching the row(s) grow as christmas approached. Eventually we’d take them down around mid-January, but it was still a treat to get/read them.

Most were short and simple. A few contained pictures and/or letters that went into great detail about the past year in whoever had sent it. These were probably my favorite. We would get several from people who had moved across country years before and we never saw… but we would also get letters from people who we saw quite often. It was great to read about their lives; got to put in perspective what we noticed and what we didn’t.

Today is the anniversary of the Worcester Cold Storage warehouse fire back in 1999. Six firefighters died in what some called “the perfect fire.”

Learn, remember and then don’t forget.
