Question No: 194
March 22, 2007 – 9:56 pmYou are configuring a workstation to use dial-up networking by installing an ISA internal modem operating on COM2 using standard settings. You are unable to initialize the modem. What is the most likely cause of this problem?
A. Conflict with IRQ3.
B. Conflict with IRQ4.
C. Incorrect IP addressing.
D. Incorrect IPX addressing.
Answer: A
Explanation: This is a likely hardware conflict problem. Two devices are using the same IRQ: COM2 uses IRQ3.
Why the hell are IRQ questions on a networking exam in 2007? Grr.

And why are they asking about ISA? That hasn’t been used or even available for many years.

I’m pretty slow on the uptake but I wondered at first – and briefly – if ISA was something new under the sun.
But why ask about IRQ? Just because Windows hides the messy details behind the walls doesn’t mean you don’t need to know about them.
Okay, yes, 99% of the time it all just works and you don’t even have to know about interrupt lines. But that 1% of the time when it all goes off the rails knowing what is supposed to be happening is going to be a big help fixing the issue.
But I will admit I”m rather old fashioned in this attitude. If I start going on about the good old days and setting dip switches on cards by hand .. smack me.
